TONIGHT --> Enjoy creative expressions of literature and storytelling thru 3D emotional and participatory story spaces crafted by middle school kids and others. Enter a fearlessly engaging humanities and inventive technical skills’ project in Second Life created by Ramapo middle school students and inspired by Robert Frost's poem, A Road Less Traveled.

Ramapo's Frost Theater
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Eduisland 6/28/225/21

The TASK--> Students were challenged to find their own meaning beyond a literal interpretation of Frost’s words using a storytelling prompt on the larger theme of struggling with decisions in our lives. Good storytelling reaches down deep into our minds, hearts, and spirits – it connects the humanity in all of us. While the new media of constructing in Second Life was thrilling for everyone, it is the stories behind the stories that makes storytelling work worth the “taffy pull” of taking authors deeper than the facts and information usually found in good digital stories.

The STORYPROMPT --> Share a remembered time when a choice made or not made touched your own lives.

The PROCESS --> Teams of students tackled the creative task of finding, sharing, and then translating very personal experiences into 3D emotional immersive storyworlds for others to experience their own parallel visual storytelling about CHOICE and their lessons learned. These storybuilders designed emotional dynamics according to his or her artistic vision providing the Protagonist, you, the player, with complete freedom to interact and choose your own path in whichever way you like. The students had to dig deep for their thinking and understanding beyond where the plot should go. They had to imagine every possible direction a "protangonist" could go and still organize the story in a dramatically coherent way. It's like drawing a map of your entire imagination, which the player then traverses. Students used dioramas to construct their storyboarding making sure that each technical element was developed to ILLUMINATE the experience not DECORATE!

Creativity, engagement, and deep introspection into sharing something real in their lives gave this project a special glow for everyone! The students translated very personal experiences into 3D emotional immersive storyworlds for others to experience their own parallel visual storytelling about CHOICE and their lessons learned making it come ALIVE for others in a participatory design.

MORE StoryWorld Sites --> We will tour as many as we have time for tonight. But we leave these landmarks for you to enjoy in your own leisurely way or invite others to return and experience with you. Some of them take a radically different approach - some are considered walk-in books of very literal translation of literature and some are very immersive. Enjoy!

[2009/03/02 18:40] Corwin Carillon: you'll have an even harder one getting out!
[2009/03/02 18:40] Bernajena Pinazzo: LOL naughty corwin
[2009/03/02 18:41] Jackie Rexen: This is a pretty nice looking purgatory
[2009/03/02 18:46] Norma Underwood: Interesting

[2009/03/02 19:01] Bernajena Pinazzo: which underworld - the purgatory of karman
[2009/03/02 19:01] Tazzy Tigerfish: I think I need time just to go look around at my own pace to absorb it all
[2009/03/02 19:01] Corwin Carillon: just to suggest that for Macbeth ask Anya Ixchel for a tour
[2009/03/02 19:02] MiAn Landar: Thank you it was a power tour
[2009/03/02 19:02] Mollymalone Skytower: Purgatory
[2009/03/02 19:02] Maggie Marat: The underworld was designed in such a way to demand that you are lost :-)
[2009/03/02 19:02] Anny Khandr: A taste - a tease
[2009/03/02 19:02] Jackie Rexen: Some tours are better with groups - some better alone - I prefer these "worlds" alone to absorb it
[2009/03/02 19:03] Anny Khandr: Feels a little over my head - how appropriate to be in Atlantis
[2009/03/02 19:03] Bernajena Pinazzo: maggie - anything you want to add
[2009/03/02 19:04] Corwin Carillon: http://virtualmacbeth.wikispaces.com

[2009/03/02 19:04] Kimberly Firehawk: Oh the places you'll go by Dr. Seuss
[2009/03/02 19:04] Corwin Carillon: from interviewing people ..
[2009/03/02 19:05] Mollymalone Skytower: That would be a great story
[2009/03/02 19:05] Anny Khandr: Does it take forever to create a story world?
[2009/03/02 19:05] Tazzy Tigerfish: Kim that is a good one
[2009/03/02 19:05] DigiGal Writer: Folk Tales
[2009/03/02 19:05] Grammy Somerset: Immigration into the US
[2009/03/02 19:05] Tazzy Tigerfish: I think maybe something that they wrote would be great
[2009/03/02 19:05] Corwin Carillon: this was done in the US and revealed a whole history for a town around the 2nd WW
[2009/03/02 19:05] Corwin Carillon: that was not known before
[2009/03/02 19:05] Anny Khandr: Were the builders kids?
[2009/03/02 19:05] Corwin Carillon: cool
[2009/03/02 19:06] Anny Khandr: Ah, that's wonderful - they were the directors!
[2009/03/02 19:06] Anny Khandr: Teachers as day-laborers
[2009/03/02 19:06] Corwin Carillon: I think it is great their took on role of virtual directors/producers
[2009/03/02 19:06] Kimberly Firehawk: That's what I would be afraid of... getting lost in the technology and not staying on point.
[2009/03/02 19:07] Tazzy Tigerfish: ? about how many kids worked on each project?
[2009/03/02 19:07] Anny Khandr: Wow!
[2009/03/02 19:07] Corwin Carillon: the negotiation of how meaning wll be communicated is lovely
[2009/03/02 19:07] Corwin Carillon: meaning/emotion
[2009/03/02 19:08] Corwin Carillon: have you done the backstory as a story?
[2009/03/02 19:08] Anny Khandr: I'm in a state of wonder - what this kind of in-world role-playing can do...
[2009/03/02 19:08] Corwin Carillon: if not, I hope you both will
[2009/03/02 19:08] Bernajena Pinazzo: We presente4d at NECC - confer3ence and getting ready to publish. there is a wiki website in the back of the Frost theater that gives a bit of the journey and teacher reflection - we hope to write it up soon
[2009/03/02 19:09] Corwin Carillon: cool .. i hope it will be a digigstory :)
[2009/03/02 19:09] Bernajena Pinazzo: Corwin- you are right about the back story - even with the digital movies in the story gardens - there is always a story behind the story
[2009/03/02 19:09] Corwin Carillon: lol
[2009/03/02 19:10] Tazzy Tigerfish: did we loose sound?
[2009/03/02 19:10] Corwin Carillon: it is just breaking up a little
[2009/03/02 19:10] Anny Khandr: Yes

[2009/03/02 19:10] sueling Sorbet: breaking up
[2009/03/02 19:10] Kimberly Firehawk: I hear you but you do tend to break up Bernajean.
[2009/03/02 19:10] Tazzy Tigerfish: I am not hearing anyone right now
[2009/03/02 19:10] Bernajena Pinazzo: so sorry - there are also more stories digital movies - in the storygardens
[2009/03/02 19:11] Kimberly Firehawk: Tazzy you might be lagged a bit.
[2009/03/02 19:11] Corwin Carillon: Maggie is saying to come back to absorb and give feedback to the kids there
[2009/03/02 19:11] Anny Khandr: How to give the kids feedback?
[2009/03/02 19:11] Corwin Carillon: there is a drop box I think there
[2009/03/02 19:11] Corwin Carillon: so you can drop a notecard with comments
[2009/03/02 19:12] Bernajena Pinazzo: yes - a drop box
[2009/03/02 19:12] Corwin Carillon: but it is good to ahve a tour then come abck
[2009/03/02 19:12] Bernajena Pinazzo: I learned that these worlds are really a personal experience not a group visit - that was a surprise to me
[2009/03/02 19:12] Anny Khandr: Do you find that when students are immersed in story, they can take that with them and imagine a space as they read a story in a book? Hard to articulate this, but...
[2009/03/02 19:12] Jackie Rexen: This just gives us the "places" but I really loved visiting all of the places on my own - very personal and intrapersonal -
[2009/03/02 19:12] sueling Sorbet: I agree corwin, great overview and then come back
[2009/03/02 19:12] Corwin Carillon: actually I've enjoyed both in Macbeth and Thursday's fictions
[2009/03/02 19:12] Anny Khandr: I mean, once they've experienced this - yes, you're saying it.
